What is a house in a birth chart?
An astrology chart is divided into twelve houses. Planets describe themes, zodiac signs describe styles of expression, and houses describe areas of experience. Venus in a sign and Venus in a house answer different questions about the same placement.
The houses depend on your birth time and location. When either is unreliable, house interpretations become unreliable too. A calculator should not give you definite houses by quietly substituting noon for an unknown time.
Houses 1–3: self, resources and everyday exchange
The first house concerns identity, first impressions and your approach to experience. In whole-sign astrology, it is the entire zodiac sign containing your ascendant.
The second house relates to values, possessions and resources: what you appreciate and what helps you feel supported. The third relates to communication, learning, siblings and your immediate surroundings. Together, these houses offer prompts about how you begin, what you value and how you engage with daily life.
Houses 4–6: foundations, expression and routine
The fourth house concerns home, family, roots and your private foundations. It can prompt questions about what belonging means to you and the environment in which you feel at ease.
The fifth house concerns creativity, play, romance and self-expression. The sixth concerns routines, service and daily work. You might explore how you make room for enjoyment, then how everyday habits support the things that matter to you. A house placement is not a medical diagnosis or a prediction of an event.
Houses 7–9: connection, sharing and perspective
The seventh house relates to partnerships and one-to-one relationships. It can be read as a place to reflect on cooperation, expectations and what you discover through other people.
The eighth concerns intimacy, trust and shared resources. The ninth concerns beliefs, travel, higher learning and the search for meaning. These themes move from the person across the table to the wider perspectives that shape your understanding of life.
Houses 10–12: direction, community and inner life
The tenth house relates to public life, reputation and long-term direction. It invites reflection on what you want to contribute and how you define meaningful achievement.
The eleventh concerns friendships, communities and shared hopes. The twelfth concerns solitude, rest, dreams and less visible parts of experience. An empty house is still part of your chart: the absence of a planet does not mean the area is absent from your life.
Why whole-sign and Porphyry houses can differ
Whole-sign houses assign one entire zodiac sign to each house, beginning with the rising sign. The degree of the ascendant remains a specific point inside the first house. This makes the sign-to-house relationship easy to follow.
Porphyry divides the arcs between the ascendant, lower meridian, descendant and midheaven into thirds. House boundaries therefore need not follow sign boundaries. This free calculator uses whole-sign houses; Astraia’s mobile natal chart uses Porphyry. Your planetary signs can agree while some house placements differ.
